The collected water can be used directly or diverted for borewell or groundwater recharge. Since rainwater is the ultimate source of fresh water and it can be stored for a limited period of a year, a sound process for conservation is a necessity in the country today. This leaves little scope for recharging the groundwater which results in water scarcity in most parts of the country. Therefore, contributing efficiently to this section, Watermark Sustainability Foundation (WSF), a Pune-based group that offers sustainability, environmental, and MEP consultation across the country.

Asshwin Mundhaay, Director
It is a consultancy firm that has a strong track record and international tie-ups for various types of projects including high-quality water conservation projects, sustainability research, environmental research and compliance, and sustainable rainwater harvesting techniques. While offering these, the firm confirms achieving adherence to the latest standards, laws, and regulations as well as addressing modern methods and materials along with maintaining the economy and quality to take proper care of the environmental conservation.

WSF concentrates on designing to overcome the inadequacy of water, meet the demands of its customers, and reduce groundwater contamination. It also enhances the availability of groundwater at specific places and times to utilize rainwater for sustainable development along with improving the groundwater quality by dilution. Its unique technology also helps in reducing flooding and erosion as well as in increasing infiltration of rainwater in the subsoil which
has drastically decreased in the urban areas due to open spaces.

Though rainwater harvesting can be done in homes, societies, institutions, commercial premises, etc. a catchment area in the form of a roof or open space is required to capture the rain. Also, the cost associated with it will vary depending upon the catchment area and the conveyance of the storage structures finalized. RWH can be installed at a very low cost in large plots where public buildings, schools, and colleges are located, and this cost is negligible to the total construction cost if integrated with the building design.

Assisting in this area, WSF provides with unique design and execution of the rainwater harvesting system along with the designing and execution of the Reverse Osmosis system, and Sewage Treatment Plant (Prefabricated/Civil). It also involves studying and analysis of basic data concerning water requirement, consumption, and storage including firefighting needs with due consideration to existing plans. All these systems and functioning include analysis of water quality and con-trolling the need for water treatment. WSF also designs water distribution pipelines helping in water calculation and determining in underground and overhead storage facilities.

In addition to the above, the firm works on other flood mitigation by appropriately designing recharge structures in open public spaces to help in keeping the roads protected from flooding. It thus designs systems of in-creasing groundwater levels marking an improvement of both the quantity as well as the quality of the groundwater in areas that have implemented rainwater harvesting. All these processes prevent soil erosion and flooding, especially in urban areas.

It has won several recognitions for its unique contribution including QCI NABET Accredited Environmental Coordinator/Consultant, PWD Licensed Engineer, PMC Approved Licensed Engineer, ADB Certification pertaining to the Environmental Safeguards and UKGBC CPD Certified Green Building Consultant. However, intending to provide sustainability research in terms of implemented RWH and innovative systems to achieve SDG, WSF is keen to maintain its long-term relationship with its existing client.
