The overlap comes from the objective, as both help with transformation journeys i.e. becoming a better version of what you are – the Strategy Consulting piece more for organizations, while Coaching is more for individuals,” says Sandeep Jain, Founder and Principal Consultant of Value-Unlocked

Sandeep understands that Consulting is a large and cluttered market and hence it is important to create a niche for oneself. “In my view, businesses have been spending disproportionate energy and money in strategy diagnostics and road-mapping, which is almost always driven by top management but I am unsure about how many of these organization are adequately focused on making that strategy blueprint a reality. This could be for multiple reasons, but for sure one of them is that execution is hardly taught in curriculums and is for some reason not seen as an important enough task to be done by the top management and is best left to middle managers,” he says. Sandeep and his team’s value proposition to their clients is ensuring conversion of their strategies into realities. They strive to give a project management rigour to various strategic initiatives combining stringent governance and stakeholder management to ensure that decisions around execution will be taken and the projects will eventually be delivered. “Not only that, but we also ensure that the execution is led by the managers themselves, who will be nominated on various project teams so that there is no lack of ownership. We try
to use limited resources of ours and that too only if the client requires, as this ensures that not only the costs are kept contained but also the ownership remains squarely with the clients’ teams,” he informs.

Value-Unlocked’s flagship offering primarily revolves around execution-focused strategy consulting and leadership coaching for rather limited CXO and CEO level clients, mostly through company-sponsored engagements. Sandeep adds, “Driven by passion, we also work extensively with start-ups, as mentors-investors, directly and at times through various incubator and accelerator set-ups.”

Prior to starting work on any project, team Value-Unlocked makes sure that they sit with the client and discuss the most important issues, which could move the needle on the metric that they want to improve (revenue, customer acquisition, margins, cost optimization, profitability). “Surprisingly, most of the clients already know about their pain-points but it is just that they do not have the time to address these. We try to help them bring the focus back to what is important, and this could be at the organization level or function level or department level. Execution ‘hurdles’ are handled through a mix of brainstorming sessions, facilitation, coaching and innovative thinking. This inclusive approach ensuring team’s involvement in crafting solutions rather than someone prescribing these, helps builds ownership like nothing else,” Sandeep asserts.

In the last couple of years since its existence, Value - Unlocked, has garnered a decent and diverse client base that includes Indian subsidiaries of an FMCG multinational and a German healthcare group, a large Indian media player, besides numerous start-ups and also, an incubator-accelerator in social impact space. “Besides, I closely work with some family-run SME/MSME companies. I also have an engagement with China operations of a multinational, based in Shanghai,” Sandeep concludes.

By qualifications, Sandeep is a finance professional, who is equipped with diverse experience in finance and business leadership roles in multiple geographies across the Asia Pacific, in industry segments such as FMCG, Media, Pharmaceuticals and Lifestyle products. He spent almost ten years outside the country with a European FMCG company – two country leadership stints over six years in Asia and four years as Regional Finance Director for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore. This combination of finance and business experience serves him very well in the kind of engagements that he undertakes.

Besides qualifications in finance, Sandeep also has been at various executive education management programs and this has further been supplemented with learnings around digital marketing, business analytics, innovation and design thinking, which he draws on extensively in strategy consulting assignments and also, for his work with scaleups/ start-ups, for a more holistic approach. On the coaching side, he is a Marshall Goldsmith certified coach, ACC credentialed ICF member, a qualified NLP practitioner and an IAF member.
