NHAI & Jio Launch Mobile Alerts to Boost Highway Safety
- NHAI partners with Reliance Jio to roll out mobile-based safety alerts on national highways.
- Travelers will get real-time warnings about accident-prone zones, fog, diversions, and stray animals.
- Alerts will be delivered via SMS, WhatsApp, and priority calls using Jio’s 4G/5G network.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has teamed up with Reliance Jio to introduce a mobile safety alert system aimed at making highway travel safer and more predictable. The two sides signed MoU on Tuesday to roll out real-time warnings for commuters across the National Highway network.
Using Jio’s nationwide 4G and 5G infrastructure, the system will notify drivers as they approach high-risk spots such as accident-heavy stretches, zones with stray animals, fog-hit areas, and emergency diversions. The alerts will help motorists adjust their speed and driving behavior well in advance, reducing the chances of accidents.
Messages will be sent directly to mobile phones through SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority voice calls. Since the technology relies on existing telecom towers, it can be deployed quickly without installing new roadside equipment. The alerts will automatically reach all Jio users traveling on or near national highways.

NHAI said the system will be rolled out in phases and integrated with its digital platforms, including the Rajmargyatra mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline. The initiative is part of NHAI’s broader effort to improve road safety by combining digital tools with nationwide telecom reach.
The authority also confirmed it will work with other telecom operators to expand the safety alert network across the country.
